Tips on Getting Into An Elementary School Outside of Your Zone

Every child is zoned for a school and a district according to where they live.  Your child will always be able to attend your zoned school.  If you want her to go to a school outside of your zone, it's going to take some work.  While making this effort is not as pleasant as say, going to the movies, you'll feel rewarded when you find some schools that you like.

  1. Start researching other schools.  First stop: other schools in your district, where your child will usually have priority over out-of-district students.  Call your district and get materials.

  2. Some New York City schools offer gifted-and-talented programs, admission to which is determined by testing results.  Find out about these programs from districts' gifted-and-talented coordinators.  Don't assume, however, that gifted-and-talented programs are your only viable options.  The city offers many fine programs where students are heterogenously grouped.

  3. Many parents find Clara Hemphill's The Parents' Guide to New York City's Best Public Elementary Schools (Soho Press) enormously helpful in their research.
